If you’re looking for an update on the plot of the upcoming Assassin's Creed movie, here’s the latest: Michael Fassbender, star of the Assassin’s Creed movie, has opened his mouth to drop the briefest, scarcest of plot hints for his new film.

In an interview with the Wall Street Journal , Fassbender commented shortly on his character, Callum Lynch. “ He is an outsider. He’s been institutionalized from his early teens,” Fassbender explained. “He’s a little bit of a lost soul of sorts. He starts to identify [his] lineage and where he comes from in a way.”

His lineage? That’s a tantalizing word to use in the storied Assassin’s Creed franchise, which relies on the concept of genetic memories for much of its narrative conceits. If Callum’s lineage forms a major pillar of the story, there’s hopes that Lynch may wind up related by blood to some of our heroes from the Assassin’s Creed franchise.

The movie itself is an entirely new story that follows original character Lynch as he winds up in the body of his Spanish ancestor Aguilar circa the 15th century. Ubisoft’s head of Assassin’s Creed content, Aymar Azaïzia, has clarified that the film will have echoes in the larger universe: “Elements in the film have consequences as in our games, comics, and books,” he said. However, don’t expect Assassin’s Creed to be entirely historical:

When it came to the movie itself, Fassbender was enthusiastic about his experience. “It was great. It was a huge learning experience,” he stated . “To be a producer on it as well was very educational. I think we’ve got something special. I think we’ve done something original in this genre.”

In other news, the Assassin’s Creed movie has just wrapped shooting and is now in post-production .

In addition to Michael Fassbender, the film also stars Marion Cotillard , Jeremy Irons and Michael K. Williams . Assassin’s Creed opens in theatres this Dec. 21.
