Remember Avatar , not the one that destroyed a million childhoods, the other one with blue people and braid sex? Avatar 2 was looking as hard to get as “unobtanium” but James Cameron just reminded us that it’s still happening.
At Cinemacon 2016, Cameron took the stage to talk about the next Avatar sequels. There will be four, because every single movie these days has to be a massive franchise. Avatar 2, which we got a sweet looking poster for, will come out in 2018, with the next movies respectfully coming out in 2020, 2022 and 2023. I’d like to imagine the world will look a bit more like the Jetsons before we get all the movies.
Regarding the films , Cameron said: “So far what I am seeing on the wall, in terms of imagery, is way beyond the first film.” There will also be “too much story” and “too much visuals” for one film. It reminds me a bit of how George Lucas used to describe the prequels, but I’ll save my pessimism for 2018, at the earliest.
There hasn’t been a single Avatar since the first one came out in 2009, when 3-D movies were considered unique and franchise reboots were considered a bad idea. Since then, there has been a Cirque du Soleil show and a ride at Disneyland themed after the world of Pandora is slated to arrive in 2017.
