The Avatar Facebook page announced concurrent production has begun on all four sequels to James Cameron’s 2009 sci-fi blockbuster, Avatar. In addition to posting a pic of Cameron and his team, the announcement revealed the release dates for the upcoming Avatar movies. Each one is locked in for a December release date typically dominated by the year’s new Star Wars release. It’s not yet clear whether Disney will shy away from head-to-head confrontation or cede the prime release date slot to Cameron’s cat people.
Disney has a few years to decide. The first Avatar sequel is due out Dec. 18, 2020, a year after the furthest scheduled Star Wars movie — 2019’s Star Wars: Episode IX. Avatar 3 will follow a year later on Dec. 17, 2021. Subsequent sequels will be held for a few years, with Avatar 4 arriving Dec. 20, 2024 and Avatar 5 Dec. 19, 2025.
The last Friday before Christmas has been a lock for Star Wars since The Force Awakens came out Dec. 18, 2015. Both Rogue One and the upcoming Star Wars: The Last Jedi will occupy that same Friday release date.
However, there are some indications Disney might be considering trying out summer release dates. Originally, Star Wars: The Last Jedi had a planned May release date, while the next two Star Wars movies — an untitled Han Solo Star Wars Story and Star Wars: Episode IX — currently have May release dates. Since subsequent years don’t yet have a Star Wars movie announced, we can’t say for sure that future Avatar and Star Wars films will be out at the same time, as much as we might want to see the two box office monsters fight.
