The release date for Blade Runner 2 is Jan. 12, 2018, setting up the Ryan Gosling sequel to the sci-fi classic for an epic head-to-head battle for box office domination against Gnomeo & Juliet 2: Sherlock Gnomes.
While a sequel to Blade Runner is about the worst idea ever conceived, Blade Runner 2 has a number of not-so-terrible qualities. Not only will it be directed by Denis Villeneuve--who showed surreal promise with Enemy and stylistic chops with Sicario--but Blade Runner 2 will be shot by legendary cinematographer Roger Deakins.
Blade Runner 2 will see the return of Harrison Ford as Rick Deckard (it seems whatever kind of Nexus replicant he turns out to be is exempt from the 4 year expiration date), who will be joined by Ryan Gosling, presumably playing some sort of Ryan Gosling character. You know, a sexy detective or something.
So far the only indication that Blade Runner 2 will be exactly as disastrous as the concept sounds is the input of screenwriter Michael Green (Green Lantern), who will join original co-writer Hampton Fancher.
No word yet on whether the android Philip K. Dick has been asked to participate:
