Supercell just announced a new mobile multiplayer game, Brawl Stars is coming to an iOS or Android device near you. Find out everything there is to know about game, here.
While Supercell has traditionally taken long and quiet summer breaks, this year is breaking all the rules as the company just announced a brand new mobile multiplayer obsession, Brawl Stars is coming to iOS and Android in the nearish future.
According to the official Brawl Stars Reddit announcement, the new game will incorporate a crazy mix of “shoot 'em up, blow 'em up, punch 'em out" madness all packaged in fast-paced, 3v3 multi-player model.
While the post shares details about gameplay, characters and four different fight modes, which include Bounty, Smash and Grab, Heist and Showdown, it’s still a little difficult to picture just how the game will work.
To build players’ appetite for the upcoming Brawl Stars release, Supercell announced a live stream of the game in action beginning at 9 am PDT (12 pm ET). While the live stream is still an hour away, once it is finished, we’ll post our own description and impressions of the game here. Until then, here are a few details of the game as posted in the Reddit Brawl Stars announcement:
- Brawl Stars is a rowdy 3V3 multiplayer “slug fest” with crazy characters (zombies and robots and cactuses, oh my!) that punch, kick, shoot or blow up their opponents during a fast-paced battle.
- As you progress through the game, you’ll gather Elixir and chips to unlock and upgrade new characters. Each character has a signature move and a super ability that makes him or her unique. Players will also have the ability to customize their characters’ looks with unlockable skins.
- Brawl Stars incorporates four different fight modes to keep players on their feet. They are as follows:
- Bounty: Collect stars for your team by eliminating opponents, but be careful not to let them pick you off. The team with the most stars at the end of the match wins!
- Smash & Grab: Collect Crystals from the center of the map, while fighting the opposing team. The first team to collect 10 crystals and hold onto them wins.
- Heist: Crack the safe protected by the opposing team, or defend your valuables from would-be safecrackers. You have a couple of minutes to determine who leaves with the loot!
- Showdown: The rowdiest rumble! 10 players are dropped into a slowly shrinking arena. Can you be the last Brawler standing?
- The game will include bands, which are similar to clans in Clash Royale and Clash of Clans where players can share tips, battle together and more.
[UPDATE] Everything We Learned From The Brawl Stars Live Stream
To be honest, when I first started watching the stream, the game came off as really cheesy. The colors and design of the game are a pretty big departure from what we’ve typically seen come out of Supercell and it felt like a chaotic mess of shots and bombs and punches flying everywhere. As I continued to watch the interaction of the characters and the strategy involved, however, it didn’t take long form me to change my mind. This game has an arcade feel but with a strategic depth that left me hungry to get my hands on it. In the current version, the game appears to have 10 different characters to choose from, which have a specific skill and special ability. At the bottom of the post I’ve put together all the info I could glean about each character from the live stream. I will add more as further details are learned.
The stream featured the “Smash and Grab” game mode where each team has the objective of trying to grab and hold on to 10 gems that pop out of a gem mine every few seconds. Once one team grabs at least 10 gems, a 16 second count down starts. As long as the team manages to hold on to 10 gems or more for that 16 seconds, they will come out the winner. Teams are made up of three random players who must try to figure out a way to coordinate their attacks and reach their objective. The gameplay was somewhat reminiscent to a Clash Royale 2V2 battle. Plenty of crazy. Plenty of fun. There are some interesting nuances in the game. For example, each character has a certain amount of health points. If health points start getting low, the character can run toward his/her base and out of the battle to begin re-cooperating HP. Around the playing field there are various bushes and walls players can hide behind. If a player jumps in a bush and out of combat he/she actually becomes invisible to the opposing team. This can be used strategically to allow the character to heal. If a character does lose all health it dies but respawns 5 seconds later. That respawn time can feel like an eternity though when gems are at stake.
Here are the 10 characters featured in the live stream along with skills/abilities shown. I’ll add more to this as more is learned.
Brawl Stars Characters And Abilities
- Bo – long range damage character that shoots arrows. Special ability is that he tosses bombs into an area that explode a few seconds later.
- Ricochet – his bullets bounce off the walls making his shots more unpredictable for opponents.
- Crow – This little guy shoots some kind of bullets that do damage over time and has a super ability that allows him to swoop into an area quickly.
- Poco – a guitar-wielding skeleton with deadly tunes. His special ability is to heal his teammates and deal damage all with the same shot.
- Spike – this cheeky little cactus that flings spikes.
- Mordis – deals damage with a shovel, his special ability is to charge quickly at an opponent.
- Jessie – spawns something
- Neda – her special is to spawn a tank of a bear with 1200 HP. Spwaned bears can deal damage but can’t grab gems/
- El Primo – a tank with 1200 HP. In the stream OJ compared him to a level 7 Royal Giant. He deals punches at enemies in his path.
- Colt - A redheaded heavy hitter fires shots out of a tanky gun. Colt’s special ability sends out about three times the number of bullets with an extreme range.
