Facepunch Studios released its second Steam Early Access project this week, a new Vive sandbox game called Chunks, and anyone desperate for Minecraft to get official VR support should be excited for the future of the company’s latest creation.
The project’s original development name was “ViveCraft”, so it probably shouldn’t come as much of a shock that Chunks looks remarkably similar to Mojang’s sandbox game. Like Minecraft’s early releases, the first public build of Chunks isn’t exactly jampacked with features. The current build is comparable to an early iteration of Minecraft’s creative mode. There aren’t any monsters roaming the world or hunger/thirst meters to manage. Instead, players are dropped into an empty world where they can sculpt the landscape, build basic structures, place explosive blocks and construct roller coasters which can then be ridden by the player.
While there isn’t much content yet, Facepunch Studios has all but guaranteed that an influx of user-created goodies will make there way to Chunks in the near future. Despite only being in Early Access, the game currently includes Steam Workshop support and -- seeing as we’re talking about a studio that just used SteamID’s to randomly assign race, gender and penis size in Rust -- it’s hard to imagine Facepunch Studios heavily moderating those player creations. Obviously, new creations will be checked for viruses, bad code, etc; however, we’re expecting to see some pretty weird stuff added to Chunks in the coming months.
