Cyberpunk 2077 was one of the most anticipated games of 2020. And after several delays, gamers were quite confident that CD Projekt Red's futuristic RPG would be the epitome of next-gen gaming. However, things did not transpire in favor of CDPR, and Cyberpunk 2077 was one of the worst launches of 2020. The game launched with countless bugs, glitches, and overall underwhelming performance. The game was also eventually pulled down from the PS4's PlayStation Network, while Microsoft issued a warning to consumers before purchasing the game.
Causes for Plummeting Playing Numbers
Despite the launch mayhem, Cyberpunk 2077 managed to sell over 17 million copies in the first month of its launch. But a month after the game's release, the numbers aren't speaking in favor of the game anymore. Around its launch period, Cyberpunk 2077 boasted 1 million concurrent players. Today, GitHyp has reported that the concurrent players for the game dropped to fewer than 129,000.
Even The Witcher 3 faced the same thing in 2015. Yet the drop in player count started three months after the game's release. Thus, the case with Cyberpunk 2077 is on another level altogether. It isn't even a full month since the game's release, and players are already drifting away.
How CDPR May Fix the Mess
Things may still change in favor of Cyberpunk 2077 in the coming months. CD Projekt Red is restlessly releasing hotfixes and patches to improve the game's performance. The developer even promised two large patches for the game, which should roll out in January and February. The developer also claimed to release free DLCs starting this year.
After a number of patches and hotfixes, the game became somewhat stable on high-end machines. Though the same cannot be said for the advertised recommended specifications. CDPR has a long way to go if it really intends to fix the game.
Cyberpunk 2077 is available on PS4 Pro, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X, Xbox Series S, and Google Stadia.
