We’re not sure there was ever really any doubt about the campaign’s viability, but fans of the Dark Souls franchise will be pleased to hear that the Dark Souls board game Kickstarter has been a resounding success, wrapping up its fundraising period on Monday morning with more than $5.4 million in funding. Think this is what Steamforged Games had in mind when they launched their first crowdfunding campaign, asking for a meager $70,000, back in mid-April?
As you’d expect, given the disparity between fans’ contributions and the paltry sum Steamforged Games originally requested, a number of stretch goals for the Dark Souls board game have also been funded by the community. In addition to the base game, which features four playable characters, more than dozen smaller enemies and a few bosses, the Dark Souls community has also funded development of six additional expansions -- featuring everything from enemy invaders to additional grunts and player equipment -- along with eight optional boss add-ons.
Sadly, the end of the Dark Souls board game Kickstarter campaign also marks the beginning of a rather long wait for the thousands of fans who contributed to Steamforged Games’ crowdfunding campaign. As is the case with many Kickstarter projects, it will be just under a year before the company expects to begin shipping the first copies of the Dark Souls board games. Steamforged Games believes it will be ready to begin shipping units in April 2017; however, frequent Kickstarter backers will know that delays are often a part of the process too.
