Destiny 2 was originally launched back in 2017. Since then, Bungie has been committed to expanding the game through new content (expansions, seasons, etc.). Now, there is a new leak tied to the popular first-person shooter game and it seems a controversial subscription service might finally find its way into it.
It is worth noting that a lot of Destiny 2 players and fans alike are not a fan of this model. The leak was data mined from the game suggesting that Bungie could very well upend this format come 2023. Basically, a bunch of strings of text were obtained and mentioned various forms of subscriptions, such as one-month, three-month, six-month, and twelve-month. Even more so, the subscription was intended to go live and launch together with Season 20, which is slated to kick off alongside the release of Destiny 2: Lightfall.
While a subscription model of this type definitely puts a bad taste in the community, it actually would make a lot of sense. Sure, Destiny 2 is far from being similar to the likes of Final Fantasy XIV, World of Warcraft, and many others that offer the same subscription services. But it is not really a far-fetched idea for Bungie business-wise.
Although leaks like this almost stay true, it is still too early to tell if the studio would really offer a subscription service for its title. And whether or not it ends up being a reality and associated with future content like expansions or seasons, it is hard to tell if players would be enticed by it. However, if history would tell us, this can prove to be a divisive topic in the community.
For fans who are worried, fret not (for now) – this is just a leak and should be taken with a grain of salt. Bungie has neither confirmed nor denied the existence of a subscription model for Destiny 2. Since the leak was from a data mine related to Season 20 of Destiny 2, players will know for sure by February 20, 2023.
