Bright Engrams are Destiny 2‘s version of loot boxes. They’re mostly purchased with real money and contain an assortment of cosmetic items. Bungie is planning on removing Bright Engrams almost completely from their game.
Bright Engrams been in Destiny 2 since the Eververse Story was introduced, but Bungie is working on replacing them. In a post, game director Luke Smith said Bungie wants players to know exactly what they’re getting when they decide to spend money in Destiny.
“We want players to know what something costs before they buy it. Bright Engrams don’t live up to that principle so we will no longer be selling them on the Eververse Store,” explained Smith in the post.
Bright Engrams will be limited to the free track of the game’s Season Pass. This change will take place at the launch of Season 10, which kicks off next week. Bungie might replace Bright Dust with some other form of currency, as it is an integral part of cosmetic currency along with silver.
The Eververse store will continue to sell cosmetic items for Bright Dust, but players will know exactly what they’re buying with no random element present. This marks a positive shift for the game, especially as a large focus of Destiny’s post-game revolves around cosmetics and customization.
Every game should move away from the concept of loot boxes, as personally, I think the concept itself is a terrible idea which leads to gambling issues.
So, what are your thoughts on Bungie’s idea of removing Bright Engrams from the Eververse store? Do you think the game is going in the right direction by removing gambling mechanics? Whatever your thoughts may be, let us know in the comments below.
