Destiny 2
Destiny 2 Bungie

Two fairly well known food and beverage distributors are partnering with Activision to promote Destiny 2, the publisher announced this week. But we’re honestly not sure whether Activision’s latest junk food selections are a step up or down from the Red Bull promos for the first Destiny .

Beginning Sept. 1, Destiny 2 fans across North America will be able to buy game-branded cans of Rockstar Energy from participating retailers. Each can will feature a tab code that purchasers can redeem online for a smattering of in-game Destiny 2 content -- probably not as cool as the Destiny DLC that turned your Sparrow into a can of Red Bull but we’ll see -- along with chances to win “legendary prizes” on a daily and weekly basis. Grand prizes for the promotion include Destiny 2 motorcycles and other undisclosed goodies that will ostensibly be revealed before the specially-branded cans of Rockstar head to store shelves next month.

Activision is also partnering with Pop-Tarts for a promotion that might prove a bit less popular with the community, depending on how the Destiny community feels about the toaster “pastries.” According to Activision, specially-marked packages of Pop-Tarts will also go on sale next month, each offering a code that will provide its holder with a temporary XP boost for their Destiny 2 Guardian. Microtransactions have been part of the Destiny experience for several years now; however, these sorts of experience boosts have been limited to item that catapulted you directly to level 20 and was meant for experienced players who didn’t want to level a second character. The Pop-Tarts promotion doesn’t seem particularly egregious, provided the XP boost isn’t too significant, but nothing seems insulated from “pay to win” allegations these days.

Additional information on the Destiny 2 promotions can be found on the Activision Blog.

Destiny 2 is in development for PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC. The game heads to consoles on Sept. 6 before making the jump to PC in late October.
