At New York Comic Con on Friday, the BBC revealed a first-look trailer for this year’s Doctor Who Christmas Special, titled “The Return of Doctor Mysterio.”
The Dec. 25 episode will see the Twelfth Doctor (Peter Capaldi) teaming up with a superhero played by Justin Chatwin (Orphan Black) and a journalist played by Charity Wakefield (Wolf Hall) to protect New York from an alien threat. The audience at NYCC was treated to a brief glimpse of Chatwin’s character:
In a press release, Steven Moffat, writer and executive producer of Doctor Who, explained the unexpected introduction of the yet-unnamed caped hero: “I’ve always loved superheroes and this Christmas Doctor Who dives into that world. My favourite superhero is Clark Kent. Not Superman, Clark Kent.”
The BBC’s official Doctor Who Twitter account shared the 2016 Christmas Special first look simultaneously with the events of the BBC America Takeover in Madison Square Garden, as part of New York Comic Con 2016. The event also saw the debut of a new trailer for Doctor Who spinoff, Class, as well as the first episode of Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Service.
The cast and crew of Doctor Who was spotted filming earlier this summer in Bristol; it’s unclear if the filming was part of the Christmas Special, or for episodes of Season 10, but given the New York setting of “The Return of Doctor Mysterio,” the latter now seems more likely.
