Bethesda published a new DOOM trailer on Monday, less than a week after revealing all nine of the game’s multiplayer maps, and our latest glimpse of the first-person shooter breaks down three of the six multiplayer modes to be included iat launch.
In addition to the trailer, a new post on Bestheda’s website outlined all six of the multiplayer match types players can expect to see in the launch build of DOOM. It’s not clear whether or not fans can expect to see new multiplayer modes introduced after launch; however, the upcoming fourth entry in the DOOM franchise will include all of the standard FPS fare... along with a few surprises.
Here’s what we’ll see at launch:
Clan Arena
Clan Arena will likely come to be thought of as the “eSports mode” in DOOM. Two teams face-off in a match without any of the power-ups seen in other modes, including the demon rune, and without the ability to respawn after dying. There aren’t even health or armor pick-ups. Think of it like a hellish version of Counter-Strike. Victory is awarded to the first team to eliminate the opposing squad or whichever side has the most active players when time expires.
Domination
Domination sees teams fighting for three control points and attempting to hold them as long as possible. Capturing a control point is as simple as removing any nearby members of the opposing team and standing near the point for a brief period. Demon runes will spawn periodically, in random locations on each map, giving teams a chance to regain lost ground or cement their lead. Victory is awarded to the first team to reach a predetermined score, or the side with the most points when time expires.
Freeze Tag
Hilariously enough, Freeze Tag is pretty much a carbon copy of the game played by small children around the globe. Weapons now freeze opposing players. Once frozen, players must rely on their allies to unfreeze them. The thawing process begins when a non-frozen player stands near one encapsulated in ice, with speed boosts for those who thaw multiple players at once, or when a frozen player is pushed into an environmental hazard. Victory is awarded to the first team that completely freezes its opponents or the side with the most active players when time expires.
Soul Harvest
Soul Harvest is a variant on the traditional Team Deathmatch game. Players must collect souls, dropped after each kill, to gain points for their team. They can also collect the souls of their fallen allies to deny the other team points. Victory is awarded to the first team to reach a predetermined score or whichever squad has more points when time expires.
The key difference is that the first player killed in each game will also drop a power-up that confers demon status. As the demon, players have a chance to collect two souls from each other player they kill. Anyone who kills the demon will see five souls hit the ground, which can be claimed by anyone, and there’s also a chance that the demon killer will become the new demon.
Team Deathmatch
This is about as straightforward an offering as you’ll find in any first-person shooter. Two teams battle each other in one of the nine maps revealed last week, filled with weaponry, ammunition and other power-ups, using customizable marines and loadouts. The demon rune still plays a role, by powering up anyone who nabs it, but demon kills are scored the same as regular ones. Victory is awarded to the first team to reach a predetermined score or whichever squad has more points when time expires.
Warpath
Warpath is a pretty standard take on the classic King of the Hill match. Rather than controlling a single location on the map, players must conquer or defend a capture point that moves on a set path. Like Soul Harvest, Warpath will also feature a demon rune, which spawns on similar path that begins on the opposite side of the map. Players earn points for their team by standing inside the currently active control point. Victory is awarded to the first team to reach a predetermined score or the side with the most points when time expires.
