Cel-shaded video games have always struggled to actually capture the look of animation—there's always something just a bit off about the way the characters move or the way the backgrounds look that give away that it’s a video game. However, Bandai Namco may have finally accomplished what so many other studios couldn’t with its upcoming fighter, Dragon Ball FighterZ.
The new Dragon Ball FighterZ trailer features Super Saiyan Blue (SSGSS) Vegeta in action and it is insane how much this game looks like the anime. In both style and movement, DBFZ emulates the Dragon Ball Super anime series almost flawlessly. It's even crazier when you take into account that the game doesn't have a custom engine. Instead, Bandai Namco has opted to use Unreal Engine 4, and this footage goes to show just how flexible the engine is.
If you've kept up with Dragon Ball Super, this game will be a real treat. However, if you haven't watched the anime since Dragon Ball Z —ignore that Dragon Ball GT happened just like Dragon Ball Super did—then you're probably scratching your head about Vegeta's blue hair and what exactly Super Saiyan Blue even is.
Dragon Ball Super has introduced a heaping helping of new Super Saiyan transformations and Super Saiyan Blue (or Super Saiyan God Super Saiyan) is the most powerful of the new forms (sort of). Of course, like all things in Dragon Ball, the actual power level of everything is relative to the situation, but in theory, Super Saiyan Blue Vegeta makes Vegeta at the end of Dragon Ball Z look like Vegeta when he first landed on Earth. Goku and Vegeta are now taking on deities from other realms that could wipe out a universe (there's multiple now) in the blink of an eye.
Excited to get behind the controls of one of the most powerful figures in the Dragon Ball franchise? You'll be able to harness the power of Super Saiyan God Super Saiyan Vegeta, along with a ton of other familiar characters soon. Dragon Ball FighterZ releases for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC in North America and Europe on Jan. 26, 2018.
