New sales figures for Dragon Quest Builders have been revealed by Square Enix, in an interview with a popular Japanese gaming site, and current numbers certainly suggest we could see more from the Dragon Quest spin-off down the road. Dragon Quest Builders may not set any sales records for Square Enix or the industry, but (from where we’re sitting) there seems to be more than enough interest to justify a sequel.
If you somehow missed out on the game’s promotional cycle, Dragon Quest Builders is a sandbox game, heavily inspired by Minecraft, set in the same world as the first Dragon Quest. The game is set in an alternate timeline, one where the protagonist made some drastically different decisions at the end of DQ1, and tasks players with rebuilding towns that were destroyed by the Dragonlord and his minions. Given the franchise’s struggles outside of Japan, many fans weren’t sure Builders would find an audience in Europe and North America. But those fears have been assuaged.
Speaking with 4Gamer, Square Enix confirmed that more than 1.1 million copies of Dragon Quest Builders have been sold globally, making it one of the year’s top releases. To celebrate, Square Enix is planning to give away the bonus DLC included with the Day One Edition of Dragon Quest Builders to any Japanese PSN user who owns the game. There’s no word on whether or not the promotion will also extend to Europe or North America.
