A new report from a prominent European video game news site suggests development of Dying Light 2 could already be underway at Techland, apparently alongside an untitled fantasy RPG of some kind, but it sounds like we’ll have to wait a bit longer to get confirmation from the studio.
Earlier this week, Techland founder and CEO Pawel Marchewka confirmed the Polish studio is currently working on a pair of new games. One of the projects, an open-world game with RPG and fantasy elements, is being developed by the studio’s Warsaw team; an outfit which comprises about half of the studio’s roughly 300 employees. The other project, which some believe could be Dying Light 2 , is being created by the Techland team based in Wroclaw.
So why is everyone so sure this is Dying Light 2 ?
While proof of development has yet to emerge, rumors about a Dying Light sequel can mostly be attributed to Eurogamer, after the outlet published portions of a conversation with Marchewka on Thursday morning. When asked whether or not Techland would be interested in working on Dead Island 2, now that Techland has seemingly repaired its relationship with Deep Silver, the CEO told Eurogamer that management “had a talk about it.” He also specifically mentions Dying Light 2 by name. Sadly, a member of the studio’s PR team cut off Marchewka before he could finish his thought, with a quick assertion that “the Dying Light brand is more important for [Techland].”
On the plus side, the Techland CEO also says he expects both projects to surface in the next three years, so we can't imagine fans being forced to wait all that much longer before the studio begins pulling back the curtains. We'll just have to hope there aren't any major delays for either project. That said, why would the studio's founder and CEO refer to Dying Light 2 by name, suggesting it's already a real project, unless Techland was currently working (or at least planning to work) on the game?
We’ve reached out to Techland, hoping for more information on the matter, and will update this post if/when we hear back from the studio.
UPDATE: We've received the following response from a studio representative:
"At the moment all we can say is we’re working on two big AAA projects. The one which being developed by our Warsaw studio is an open-world fantasy game with RPG elements and is a new IP. The Wroclaw studio are focused on something different, but just as big in scale.
We’ll hopefully be able to announce more details towards the end the year."
