While Fallout 4 is almost out, fans are already asking developer Bethesda about what is coming next. Mostly the conversation turns to when we will hear about the next Elder Scrolls game. This should be the next game from Bethesda if its previous development cycles are any indication. Unfortunately, fans shouldn't expect to hear anything soon.
This news comes via Dualshockers, who spoke with Pete Hines at gamescom. Hines is the VP of Marketing for Bethesda. When asked about a potential Elder Scrolls VI, Hines mentioned that it would be a "very long time" before Bethesda would be ready to talk about it.
While unfortunate, this news should come as little surprise to anyone who is a fan of the games made by Bethesda. For one, everything related to the Elder Scrolls franchise for the past few years (and probably the next few as well) is Elder Scrolls Online content. This will likely continue forward, seeing as how Bethesda has plans in place to continue expanding the game with regular DLC updates.
Bethesda has also stated that they prefer making game announcements close to the end of the development cycle. Todd Howard, the Game Director for both Fallout 3 and The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, isn't a fan of keeping people dragging along for years. In an interview with German outlet GameStar, Howard mentioned that he would rather dump a ton of information about a project that is almost complete than let information trickle out over a long while.
The full interview can be watched above, but skipping to the 21:30 mark, he starts talking about his next project:
"We get asked a lot, I sort of tell people we're figuring things out. We're taking our time, we're extremely excited about it and the reason we're kind of holding back right now is because we want to wait until it's really there to show it to everybody. We don't want to kind of dribble it out, we'd rather say, you know, 'surprise, boom, here it is.' And make sure that moment of learning about something and seeing for the first time is really... I enjoy those moments for other games so we'd rather hold back and wait and just surprise everybody."
If you are looking for getting your single-player Elder Scrolls fix on the latest generation of consoles, you're probably better off waiting to see if Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim will be made Backward Compatible for Xbox One. Bethesda has confirmed that Fallout 3 will be Backward Compatible, so it makes sense that they would probably make the rest of their library of games Backward Compatible as well.
So what do you think? Do you hope the next Elder Scrolls game will be as groundbreaking as Skyrim was? Are you more excited about playing Fallout 4 instead? Let us know your thoughts in the comments section below.
