Julien Gatumel, PR Director at Sandbloom Studio, said in a statement that the game is inspired by a number of classics. Specifically, he mentioned that the game “gets inspiration from games like Super Meat Boy for its quickness and puzzle-like levels, and Celeste for its simple reusable mechanics. It is also inspired by Alto’s Adventure for its mood and minimalistic art.”
EMMA: Lost in Memories describes itself as a “poetic, surrealistic, and melancholic” game. Players of the action running platformer take on the role of Emma, the main character who is young, vibrant, and intriguing. Emma gets lost in a strange and dangerous world after she follows an owl and leaves her home.
Players are going to get lost with Emma, but they should always remember to find the exit. To reach the exit in every stage, players can double jump, duck, dash, climb, and bounce on walls. They have to be quick enough in order to avoid falling off of the screen, since the walls and platforms fade away as Emma touches them.
There are also special items all through the game. At every single level, players are going to find a simple feather. Each one of these feathers is necessary to reveal the background story and unlock additional content, so don’t forget to collect them throughout all of the levels.
The key features of EMMA: Lost in Memories include the following:
- One fast and simple mechanic: all the platforms and walls start disappearing when you touch them! This dynamic fade away mechanic makes the gaming experience both challenging and intriguing.
- The character runs automatically at a fixed speed! Control her special abilities (double jump, dash and climb) and do your best to react at the correct time.
- Minimalistic 2D artistic style completely drawn by hand, including the sceneries, characters and backdrops. The game combines real imagery with surreal and strange elements tied to Emma’s imagination. There are 5 different worlds in the game, and each one of them has its own theme.
- Dynamic gameplay in a poetic and eccentric world.
- Single-screen levels which combine skill and ingenuity with planification and strategy.
- Two game modes: Main Story and Memory Chest. Complete the Main Story first to enjoy the levels in the Memory Chest!
- Delicate reflection on memory loss.
