The latest Fallout 4 DLC, Contraptions Workshop, is now available to play. The DLC revolves around new crafting items, with the ability to make automatic machines and programmable warehouses. Doing this will require a ton of resources, so here’s the best spots to go hunting.

What You Want

To really succeed with Contraptions Workshop, you’ll need three important resources: steel, gears and rubber. These will allow you to create more conveyor belt parts, and are also important at making the weapons forges and things like that. Outside of the big three, circuitry and aluminum will also come in handy.

So where do you go when you want steel, gears and rubber?

Steel

Steel is most easily found both in settlements and out in the Commonwealth. Make sure you scrap every car you can find on your settlements, as those usually give a good amount steel. Another pro-tip for steel collection is to find cans. One tin can breaks down into two steel, and only weighs one pound. Load up on cans, and you’ll load up on steel.

As for locations in the Commonwealth to start your search, check out the Corvega Assembly Plant. This place is filled with steel, gears, aluminum and even some rubber. We don’t recommend you use tube flanges or connecting rods for steel, as they don’t give many resources for how heavy they are.

Another great spot for steel is Wilson Automatoys Factory. This place is loaded with steel, especially Giddyup Buttercup parts.

Really, steel is the easiest of the resources to come across, so you shouldn’t have to worry much here.

Gears

Gears are found in all sorts of items, so it’s best to tag gears so a magnifying glass icon will appear next to any item that has one. If you want gears, pocket watches are the best. They weigh half a pound, and have two gears each. Other good gear items include desk fans and adjustable wrenches.

If you’re looking for good locations to check out, the two mentioned above are great gear spots. Corvega Assembly Plant and Wilson Automatorys Factory have plenty of gears and items with gears inside. Another nice spot would be The Institute, as microscopes have gears inside. The drawback here is microscopes are pretty heavy, so you don’t get as many gears for the weight you have to lug around.

Rubber

Rubber may be the hardest of the three to find out in the Commonwealth, but is incredibly easy to find at settlements. Any tire or wall of tires can be broken down into rubber, with individual tires giving four rubber and tire walls dropping a massive 30 rubber.

As for items to keep your eyes out for, saws and bonesaws have a good amount of rubber in them along with plungers, kickballs and basketballs. These are all pretty lightweight items as well, so carry as many as you can grab.

Finding these items might be a little tricky though, as there isn’t one great place to find them. Look in hospitals for saws and bonesaws, you might find a few plungers along the way as well. Kickballs and basketballs seem to just show up everywhere, but you can also try the different schools around the Commonwealth to increase your odds.

Circuitry

While not as crucial as the other components, you’ll still need circuitry to craft some of the new items in Contraptions Workshop. The best item to get here is the military-grade circuit board, which can be found at many military locations like Fort Hagen. Other items, like hot plates and telephones, have some circuitry inside as well.

That’s all the basic components you’ll need to get yourself started in Contraptions Workshop. Once you get your machines up and running, you’ll need even more crafting components to actually make new items. Keep up the search, and you could find yourself drowning in gear.

So what do you think? Are you still looking for one specific crafting component? What are you going to make in Contraptions Workshop? Let us know your thoughts in the comments section below.
