Final Fantasy 15 director Hajime Tabata has made no bones about his ambitions for a PC port of Final Fantasy 15. As far back as November of last year, Tabata has said he’d like the PC version of Final Fantasy 15 to be much more than the simple, often-borked ports PC fans of J-RPGs ( and other games ) tend to get.
In this week’s Weekly Famitsu , Tabata discussed the subject of Final Fantasy 15 with relish. He stated, “I’d like to release the game on PC as a technical attempt. I want to show PC users Final Fantasy XV running on high-end machines, and we personally would like to see it, too. Also, I would like to try developing on PC to pursue a unique way of playing with PC-exclusive features like making your own quests and enjoying the world using things like mods.”
Tabata seems to be envisioning not a cut-and-paste port, but an enhanced edition that takes the strengths of PC and runs with them. This gels with his previous interview with a French gaming site, where he said :
“I’m quite positive about the idea of developing a PC version, but I would like to make a very different project if possible. The reason I’m interested is that a PC version would propel the game to another technical level.
“I have in mind a version of Final Fantasy 15 that is more technically developed. This version could incorporate things that we were forced to abandon because of the limitations of home consoles. With the PC, this would be an opportunity to release a version far superior in terms of quality and tech.
That said, if we choose to develop this project, the development will start from scratch by doing research of what would be the best technology to use. It might not be a simple port of the console version.”
Side note: Final Fantasy 15 ’s VR sections are still in progress. Tabata stated, “Development is progressing, but we haven’t progressed to the point where we can say specifically when it will be released.”
