Five Nights At Freddy’s: The Freddy Files has been a known quantity for quite some time, but it’s never been totally clear what this book is all about. However, thanks to a seven-page sample from iBooks, we now have a much better idea. It’s essentially a basic lore and tip manual for the books and games.

As far as we can see from its limited table of contents, The Freddy Files appears to cover all four main Five Nights At Freddy’s games plus Sister Location and the novel series. Conspicuously absent from the list is the much-maligned spinoff RPG, FNaF World. The free Scott Cawthon experiment is believed to contribute to the larger story in significant ways, especially in relation to Five Nights At Freddy’s 3, but it doesn’t look like that theory will be discussed too much here.

Instead, each of the book’s six chapters contain three main sections: a general summary of the story and new mechanics, gameplay tips to help players survive the night and some basic talking points for theories without any concrete solutions. Is it possible that Scott may have hidden a few secrets in here for those with sharp eyes? Given the book’s jumbled and playful page design, we wouldn’t put it past him. However, on the surface at least, it looks like this will do nothing to “solve” Five Nights At Freddy’s.

For example, the lore page for the original Five Nights At Freddy’s recaps key questions from phone calls, such as “what is the bite of ‘87,” but it doesn’t reveal anything specific about the actual event or if it’s been witnessed in any of the games. Tips offer a basic mapping of where and when certain animatronics will appear, and there’s also a handy chart to explain time passage, power values and more. True to its classification as a guidebook, however, this product won’t offer definite steps to beat the game’s hardest moments. There’s a lot in here to facilitate success with a little hard work, though.

Five Nights At Freddy’s: The Freddy Files continues what has essentially been a summer focused entirely on Five Nights At Freddy’s books. Five Nights At Freddy’s: The Twisted Ones released this June, and it continues the novelized narrative of Charlie and her friends as they seek to unravel the mysteries of the nefarious William Afton and Freddy Fazbear’s Pizza. A solid cliffhanger ending suggests we’ll get more from that plot in the future, but The Freddy Files is designed to pacify fans until then.

It’s also worth pointing out that these printed projects have released despite the cancellation of a new franchise game. While a sixth Five Nights At Freddy’s was in development and teased by its creator, its concept seemingly wasn’t solid enough to be worthy of the series’ viral pedigree.

Five Nights At Freddy’s: The Freddy Files is listed for an Aug. 29 release in ebook and paperback formats.
