Fortnite received a new update today that has massively reduced the game's installation size on PC. Before the update, the game took up about 100GB of disk space, and players were wondering whether the file size would continue to balloon or not.
Fortunately, with the new update, the game's installation size has gone down to a mere 30GB. The update itself is quite big in size, approximately 27GB, but Epic has stated that the update is aimed at cleaning up the game's installation and making it more compact. A tweet shared by Fortnite Status states that the update is meant "to make optimizations on PC resulting in a massively reduced Fortnite file size (over 60 GB smaller), smaller downloads for future patches, and improved loading performance."
In a time when video game sizes are growing larger and larger in size, it's quite good to see that Epic has done something about Fortnite's concerning file size. Recently, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare and Warzone crossed 250GB in size, raising concerns among PC gamers. However, Activision has acknowledged the increasing file size and has promised players that it will be fixing the massive Modern Warfare file size very soon.
When Fortnite released back in 2018, it was just 18GB. Over the course of two years, the game's file size shot up to 90GB. One of the major reasons for such a huge size increase is due to maps, events, and cosmetic items. It seems that up until now, Fortnite did not remove old files from the game, even after the conclusion of previous events. However, with the new update, Epic has cleaned up the game's installation and several users have also reported that after the latest patch, the game also seems to load faster.
Fortnite is currently available on PC, PS4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, Android, iOS, and MacOS.
