With The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild i n the rearview mirror, fans are already talking about the next Zelda game. In a recent interview with Famitsu, Breath of the Wild director Eiji Aonuma was asked about the next Zelda game and his response was interesting.

The next Zelda game be an open-air experience, which will be the standard for the series moving forward.

Here’s a rough translation of the the aforementioned excerpt from Famitsu.

Famitsu: Making the next Zelda game might be more difficult if you choose to make it an open-air game. What will evolve open-air? How will you make future dungeons? What will the next Zelda title be like?

Aonuma: I think that, in the future, open air games will be the standard for Zelda.

Breath of the Wild saw the move to an open-air style game and the title benefited from it. It felt completely different from every Zelda game before it, yet it still felt genuinely Zelda. Perhaps the next Zelda game will be even larger than Breath of the Wild, with more dungeons and areas to explore.

There is DLC coming to Breath of the Wild later in the year in the BotW expansion pass. The first content pack is scheduled to launch this summer, and will include the addition of a Cave of Trials challenge, a new hard mode and a new feature for the in-game map.

The second content pack will launch during the holiday season of 2017, and adds new challenges that will let players enjoy a new dungeon and a new original story.

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is currently available for the Nintendo Switch and Wii U.
