Paul Kaye, who plays Thoros of Myr on Game of Thrones but hasn’t been seen since Season 3, will return for Season 6 according to his agency. A thief and scoundrel, in addition to a priest in service to the Lord of Light, R’hllor, Thoros of Myr is closely affiliated with two other exciting characters: Beric Dondarrion and Lady Stoneheart.
Beric Dondarrion, the Lightning Lord, may not be the most likely candidate for the legendary hero Azor Ahai, though he does wield a sword of fire and has the remarkable capacity to return, over and over, from the dead. In some ways he most closely fits the prophecies, though his appearances in the book suggest instead a false prophet, whose painful resurrections repeat the perversion of prophecy at the hands of Thoros of Myr. The last we saw of Beric Dondarrion on Game of Thrones he had just returned from being nearly cleaved in half by Sandor Clegane.
There is a good chance that the return of Thoros of Myr means that we’ll at least learn of Beric Dondarrion’s fate, even if the character doesn’t return. Of course, there’s an even more outlandish and exciting possibility: Lady Stoneheart.
A long-time fan favorite, Lady Stoneheart is the resurrected Catelyn Stark, who spends A Feast For Crows leading the Brotherhood Without Banners around Westeros, slaughtering Boltons, Freys and Lannisters. It is widely assumed that she will not appear in HBO’s Game of Thrones , but the return of Thoros of Myr makes her return a little more likely. It is Thoros of Myr and Beric Dondarrion who bring her back, Dondarrion sacrificing himself in the process.
According to Game of Thrones fan site Watchers on the Wall, “We also heard from another source that Kaye had been involved in some sort of hanging scene.” This would fit with the return of Lady Stoneheart, since Stoneheart’s preferred method of execution is by hanging.
Though it still seems spectacularly unlikely, the return of Thoros of Myr to Game of Thrones Season 6 is our best evidence yet that Lady Stoneheart may finally put in an appearance.
