Game of Thrones creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss appeared on the UFC Unfiltered podcast and mentioned a later than usual airdate for Game of Thrones Season 7. "We don't have an air date yet, but this year will probably be a little bit later,” the co-writers told hosts Jim Norton and Matt Serra.
Benioff and Weiss cited environmental changes to come in the upcoming Season 7. At the end of Game of Thrones Season 6, the white raven flew from the maester’s Citadel in Oldtown, finally heralding the arrival of winter after six seasons of “Winter is Coming.”
“T hat means that sunny weather doesn't really serve our purposes any more,” the Game of Thrones co-writers said. "So we kind of pushed everything down the line, so we could get some grim grey weather even in the sunnier places that we shoot."
How much of a push that means is unclear, but if Game of Thrones gets nudged back to the more appropriately thematic winter season then we could see the face-off of the century: Game of Thrones vs. the theatrical release date of Star Wars: Episode VIII.
Sure, it seems a little unlikely. If the Game of Thrones Season 7 release date gets nudged it may just mean we’ll be waiting for winter battles to air in the dead heat of summer 2017.
