Following its initial reveal for E3 2019, THQ Nordic has finally showcased more of the upcoming SpongeBob SquarePants: Battle for Bikini Bottom – Rehydrated, the highly anticipated remake of the cult classic that triggers a special kind of nostalgia for kids who are the biggest fans of the legendary show. The game is currently in development for all platforms, and it’s showcase at Gamescom this year provided players a sneak peek of what to expect from the 3D adventure platformer. Check out five minutes of SpongeBob SquarePants: Battle for Bikini Bottom – Rehydrated below, courtesy of Gematsu and coming directly from the Gamescom Together live stream.
From a technical standpoint, the game looks pretty good, although I find its muted colors to be a downgrade from the original. Gameplay-wise, the mission showed SpongeBob trying to collect Patrick’s dirty socks for him, and traversing the levels many ups and downs along the way. The animations look pretty smooth, and I can distinctly hear that topnotch music and sound design in the background, which sounds pretty amazing.
SpongeBob SquarePants: Battle for Bikini Bottom – Rehydrated will also add a new multiplayer horde mode for up to two players, which can be played either online or local split screen. As for the base game itself, THQ Nordic has noted that it will be restoring content that was cut from the original game, like a boss fight with Robo Squidward.
SpongeBob SquarePants: Battle for Bikini Bottom – Rehydrated will be released for the PS4, Xbox One, PC and Switch at a later date.
Be sure to stick around for more news on the latest happenings at Gamescom all throughout the week.
