Gears of War 4 will make its retail debut on October 11, nearly one full decade after the first GoW debuted on Xbox 360, and a new interview with The Coalition studio head Rod Fergusson offers a handful of new details about the next entry in the Gears of War franchise.
It hasn’t quite been a month since we last heard from the Gears of War 4 dev team. Back in March, we learned there’s still a chance Gears of War 4 could head to PC and that the game’s multiplayer mode will run at 60 frames per second. Now, we’ve finally been given a release date for the fourth entry in the Gears of War franchise and that timeline isn’t the only reason for fans to be excited this week. Microsoft and The Coalition have also revealed the game’s cover art, via a new story from Entertainment Weekly and the aforementioned chat with Rod Fergusson offers a fair amount of insight into the development of Gears of War 4.
According to the studio head, Gears of War 4 almost moved the franchise to a new planet, in an effort to give the series’ new characters (and developers) a chance to add to the GoW lore without constantly walking in the shadows of previous games. But the team eventually realized switching planets would also mean they couldn’t revisit some of their favorite locales from previous games. So it probably shouldn’t come as too much of a shock that Gears of War 4 will return to Sera.
As if all that weren't enough, today's update included details on the promised Gears of War 4 beta. Those who purchased Gears of War: Ultimate Edition will be given access to the Gears of War 4 beta on April 18. Those who only have a Xbox Live Gold subscription will be allowed to join the test on April 25. The Gears of War 4 multiplayer beta will continue until May 1, meaning fans will have up to 12 days to try out the new multiplayer content before they're locked out.
