The new trailer for Godzilla: Resurgence captures that same blend of profundity and shambling rubberiness as the first. It also doubles down on tank and helicopter fetishizing, one of many indications that this is indeed a Hideaki Anno story. The Neon Genesis Evangelion creator co-directed the new Godzilla with Shinji Higuchi, who directed the live-action Attack on Titan and worked on both Neon Genesis Evangelion and the 90s Gamera trilogy.
Hideaki Anno and Neon Genesis Evangelion ’s signature is all over this thing…
You’ve got choral music, super serious committee meetings, control rooms with giant screens, purple beams of light, useless missiles and artillery barrages. EVA Unit-01 would fit right in with Godzilla: Resurgence (the Godzilla vs. Evangelion dream lives on).
While we know next to nothing about the plot of Godzilla: Resurgence, the visual evidence points to a Hideaki Anno narrative in full flower. That means we can expect a whole lot more than just destruction. Expect ruminations on the mutability of the physical body, the nature of divinity and the human struggle against the impossible to tie directly into the new Godzilla’s narrative.
Godzilla: Resurgence doesn’t have a U.S. release date yet, which sucks, because it just keeps looking better and better with every new glimpse we get.
