Legendary really wants to make a King Kong vs. Godzilla remake, a studio aspiration we can all get behind. They’ve gone so far as to move their in-development Kong: Skull Island from Universal to Warner Bros. to keep the two franchises in the same wheelhouse (as chronicled by Deadline). But beyond the paperwork wrangling, a new King Kong Vs. Godzilla has an obvious size problem. In Godzilla 2014, the King of the Monsters was his tallest ever, at 355 feet. Meanwhile, King Kong started at just 24 feet tall, with later iterations usually keeping the giant ape around 50 feet in height.
Reporting from CineEurope, The Hollywood Reporter quotes Kong: Skull Island director Jordan Vogt-Roberts as saying, "This is going to be the biggest Kong there's ever been… Not 10 foot or 30 foot, but a 100-foot ape." While Vogt-Roberts declares his Kong the tallest ever, the ape was 148 feet tall in the original King Kong vs. Godzilla.
This move still only puts Kong up to Godzilla’s knees. It’s a start though, bringing them a little closer to sparring parity. Are we all too self-serious to allow for some sort of growth ray? Because they’ll have to close the gap even more before the eventual release of King Kong vs. Godzilla, presumably slated for after Godzilla 2.
The King Kong vs. Godzilla remake is still years off and will likely depend upon the success of Kong: Skull Island and the Godzilla sequel. So keep your fingers crossed that we’ll finally get the biggest knockdown, drag-out fight in monster movie history.
