Publisher THQ Nordic and developer Alkimia Interactive debuted a new trailer for the upcoming Gothic 1 Remake, one of the many announcements during the THQ Nordic Digital Showcase 2022 livestream. This new trailer features several improvements over the original demo released a while back, and as a result, it has been well-received by the fans eagerly waiting for its release. One of the many improvements was with the overall atmosphere, especially in the sound design department. Gothic 1 Remake uses many of the same sounds in the original, which was a stylistic choice decided upon by the fans. Gothic is incredibly iconic for its use of German voice acting and was critically acclaimed for the authentic feel of a desolate and hopeless mine. It’s great to see this iconic aspect back for the remake, alongside modernized graphics, textures, and hopefully, gameplay designs.
Gothic 1 Remake follows the story of the original. It takes place in a medieval fantasy realm called the Kingdom of Myrtana in which humans are fighting a losing war against their mortal enemies, the Orcs. To keep them at bay, the ruler King Rhobar II needs to extract all the magical ore that he can from the mines so that they can be forged into powerful weapons. By a decree, he sends every single man who committed a crime to the ore mines.
To control the convicts and keep them from escaping, he tasks 12 of his most powerful magicians to erect a barrier over the mining colony. However, an accident causes the barrier to expand further and cover the whole valley instead; this gives the prisoners a chance to fight back and take over the mining colony. In a last-ditch effort, the King agrees to trade with the colony instead, giving them goods in exchange for ores.
The player character is a simple, unnamed prisoner who gets caught up in the internal politics of the mining colony. As three different groups rise from the chaos, the player character must make their choice to survive and escape the barrier that holds the colony.
Gothic 1 Remake is coming to PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, and PC via Steam at a still unannounced date.
