Gundam Versus Single And Multiplayer Offerings Outlined In New Trailer

Gundam Versus is finally making the jump to North America, 15 years after the series began with Mobile Suit Gundam: Federation Vs. Zeon, and a new trailer from Bandai Namco breaks down everything fans can expect when Gundam Versus hits PS4 in September.

Franchise newcomers might be excited to learn Gundam Versus includes a robust tutorial for anyone still trying to learn the ropes or just refresh their memory. The tutorial can even be completed in split-screen, just in case there’s more than one person in your group who needs more information on the game. Free Battle sits somewhere between the traditional Arcade and Practice modes, letting players choose all four mobile suits for the fight, along with the arena, background music, etc. Your opponents will fight back but you can also adjust handicaps and other settings as needed. Players will have access to more than 90 Gundams, including iconic mobile suits like Wing Zero or the Zaku II. And there’s even a wave-based survival mode, called Ultimate Battle, that will ask players to fight off legions of enemy mobile suits.

Unfortunately, it doesn’t look like there’s going to any sort of narrative offering built into Gundam Versus. Players will have a variety of single and multiplayer options when the game debuts. But anyone hoping for a traditional fighting game story mode, with separate endings for the various combatants on the roster, is going to be a bit disappointed. The closest GV gets to a proper campaign is Trials Mode, which asks players to complete pre-determined scenarios against increasingly powerful enemies. Each trial features several encounters, capped with a boss fight, but don’t go in expecting all of the production value seens in other fighting game stories. Character interactions are limited to 2D art of the pilot and some on-screen text.

For a closer look at Gundam Versus, take some time to watch the game’s new six-minute trailer published this week. Then head down to the comments and let us know if you’re planning to pick up a copy of Gundam Versus when the game hits PS4 later this year.

Gundam Versus heads to PlayStation 4 on Sept. 29.
