The Lich King boss battle in Knights Of The Frozen Throne is the hardest A.I. opponent you’ll ever face in Hearthstone . In order to get that awesome looking Uther hero portrait that everyone wants because Lady Liadrin didn’t become a death knight, you have to beat the bad ass with all nine classes. For each one of the righteous, he’s got a sneaky trick up his armor that will annoy you till no end. Expect this process to take a few hours and dozens of game restarts This son of a bitch won’t go down without a serious fight.
In order to beat the Lich King, you have to understand him. For each class you play, he plays a different card on turn one.
Anduin: Shut up, Priest; Your opponent can’t emote
Garrosh: The True King; Gain 100 armor
Gul'dan: Soul Reaper; Deal two damage for each duplicate in opponent’s deck.
Jaina: The True Lich; Set your opponent’s health to one.
Malfurion: Purge the Weak; Destroy all enemy minions that cost three or less, wherever they are.
Rexxar: The Hunted; Deal two damage to your opponent for each minion in their deck.
Thrall: Necrotic Plague; Set minions in your opponent's hand and deck to 1/1.
Uther: Fallen Champions; Whenever an enemy minion dies this game, take control of it.
Valeera: The Price of Power. Destroy every spell in your opponent’s hand and deck.
Each battle changes depending on who you pick, though the Lich’s cards stay the same. He’s going to play coin into Glacial Shard or Skeletal Knight, followed by his hero power that summons a 2/2 ghoul on turn two. From there, the Lich King becomes highly unpredictable, playing Taunts like Sludge Belcher and Saronite Chain Gang to block your attacks. But on turn seven, no matter what, he’ll equip a Frostbourne, summoning six 2/6 souls that make him invulnerable while they’re still alive. After they have been cleared, his hero power transforms into direct damage to your hero, adding +1 damage each turn. He won’t go down without a serious fight.
If you have a large card collection, including Wild cards you haven’t used since The Grand Tournament , I recommend checking out Brian Kibler’s deck lists. He’s still one of the best players in the game, and his decks are all fairly easy to understand and pick up. The decks do use a lot of Legendaries you might not have, like Reno Jackson and Emperor Thaurissan, so it won’t be an option for everyone. Here are the deck import codes, but don’t be surprised if you need to replace any of these cards.
There’s also this list of free-to-play decks that only use Basic cards, but it’ll require even more luck in order to take the Lich King down.
For the cheapskates who don’t mind wasting their time, there is another way. Murlocs really beat the shit out of the Lich King – they’re able to deal enough damage before turn seven, when he becomes invulnerable and all hope is lost. It’s easiest on Paladin, because they have the best Murlocs and hand buffs, but winning like this with every class is still highly doable. I’ve managed to make my way through half the classes with this strat, though my blood pressure and anger is through the roof.
Here’s the list and if you don’t have Old Murk-eye, he’s easily replaced.
Murloc Tidecaller x2
Bluegill Warrior x2
Rockpool Hunter x2
Coldlight Oracle x2
Coldlight Seer x2
Murloc Warleader x2
Vicious Fledgeling x2
Gentle Megasaur x2
Old Murk-Eye x1
You’ll need Murloc Tidecaller, Rockpool Hunter and Murloc Warleader in your opening hand. Anything else is unacceptable.
