On Tuesday, director Guillermo del Toro announced on Twitter that there will not be Hellboy 3, and that was that.
Hellboy 3 Sorry to report: Spoke w all parties. Must report that 100% the sequel will not happen. And that is to be the final thing about it
— Guillermo del Toro (@RealGDT) February 21, 2017
In the most depressing possible caveat, Del Toro added that the Hellboy franchise might be moving on without him:
Hellboy may move into a different direction. heartbroken- but, not up to me. I, for one, wish everyone involved the best of luck!

This was something Hellboy creator Mike Mignola seemed to corroborate:
No GDT Hellboy 3 does not mean there is no future to the Hellboy franchise...#hellboy

Del Toro’s 2004 original and 2008's The Golden Army might not have been the world’s biggest box office hits, but fans clung to hope that the cult favorites would get a shot at closure. Del Toro has been active about his desire to return to the world of Hellboy , as has star Ron Perlman:
Superhero seeks employment. Likes, pizza, cats, and the Marx bros. https://t.co/TnWaFlE3tx

In loving memory of the #Hellboy franchise officially biting the dust, I will take the rest of the day off Twitter.

Back in January, over 130,000 fans responded to Del Toro’s poll to confirm that they really, really wanted to see a third Hellboy movie:
Informal poll (let's see how many votes we get in 24 hours)

Hellboy III
No one can doubt Perlman and del Toro’s desire to see Hellboy 3 come to fruition; the news appears to be as devastating to them as it is to us.
So unfortunately, it looks like no matter how much money Pacific Rim 2 makes at the box office, Guillermo del Toro’s badass conclusion to Hellboy will never see the light of day. At least we have an inkling of what might have been, though that may only be salt to the wound.
Would you be willing to watch a rebooted Hellboy movie franchise without Guillermo del Toro’s deft, magical touch or Ron Perlman’s iconic performance? Feel free to talk about the death of the Hellboy 3 dream in our comments sections below.
