The Nintendo Game Boy Classic is one of the most cherished handheld systems of the 90s, and even an old dog can learn new tricks. One man just figured out a way to use an old Game Boy as a drone controller. Take a look at the demo below:
It’s no surprise that altering hardware built in the early 90s to be compatible with a modern-day wifi-based UAV isn’t easy.
“The Game Boy is just sending the bitmask corresponding to the buttons being pressed (with an Arduino and a FTDI to convert Game Link signals to USB), and a small program on the ground station converts this into actual commands for the drone (an ARDrone2 from Parrot with an extra GPS in my case),” Gautier Hattenberger explained in a blog post.
Granted, your laptop will do most of the work, but still a nostalgic sight to behold nonetheless.
