Apparently, Scrat’s unending quest for his cherished acorn does not end on the big screen. Coming in 2019, publisher Bandai Namco and developer Outright Games will be launching a video game focused on the saber-toothed squirrel's adventures (and misadventures) called Ice Age: Scrat’s Nutty Adventure.
The game’s announcement is a welcome surprise from the profitable movie franchise (which has earned an estimated $6 billion since 2002), as most people have probably thought that the series ended in 2016 when its last film, Ice Age: Collision Course, was released.
The story revolves around the often unfortunate Scrat and his search for his prized possession, the elusive acorn in the ancient Scratazon Temple. During his travels, he will collect legendary Crystals which are essential if he is to succeed in his perilous quest. The 3D action-adventure game will take players across icy terrains, raging geysers, and burning lava.
“At Outright Games, we strive to continue making games that raise the bar for family-friendly entertainment, and we worked to capture the fan-favourite qualities of Scrat in Ice Age: Scrat’s Nutty Adventure," CEO of Outright Games Terry Malham said in a press statement. "With slapstick acrobatics and thrilling in-game obstacles, this game will plunge fans into the Ice Age world for a whirlwind adventure unlike any other.”
Despite its financial success in movie theaters, the Ice Age movie franchise has been known for its sharp decline in quality, resulting to average or poor critical performance for the rest of its four installments. It is too early to say whether this will translate to their foray into video games, but for such a successful media franchise backed by a video game giant in Bandai Namco, their announcement seems too timid. It may mean that the game is subpar, or maybe they just didn’t put that much effort into making it a big surprise.
Lots of questions are still unanswered, but there’s still a few months before release so we can bide our time and reserve our judgment. Ice Age: Scrat’s Nutty Adventure will release in Autumn of 2019 for the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PC and the Nintendo Switch.
