Kingdom Hearts 3 is getting a trailer during D23, but recent statements from game director Tetsuya Nomura seem to downplay the reveals in store. During the last Kingdom Hearts Orchestra concert in Osaka, Nomura described the clip as “normal info.”
The evidence itself arrives via a tweet from concert attendee NOIX, as translated by Crash Maku Fantasy. To quote the post directly, it says “Nomura noted in the second concert today they raised expectations high” for D23. It was subsequently added that “next week will be normal, new Kingdom Hearts 3 info.”
In terms of what this means for the D23 trailer, it essentially suggests fans shouldn’t expect anything that hasn’t been seen in a Kingdom Hearts 3 announcement before. In other words, we may see some new gameplay, a world reveal or additional cinematics, but don’t go into the presentation expecting a release date.
Kingdom Hearts 3 hype has been running high since the Orchestra trailer debuted in Los Angeles a few weeks ago . The clip primarily focused on Mt. Olympus gameplay, while also offering a few minor story details. The game’s devious cast of villains is in search of a mysterious box, and Sora is doing everything in his power to protect it. Over the course of a few minutes, we saw some fresh keyblade transformations and a new perspective of a world map that’s been known since 2015.
The source of confusion, however, may be the subsequent statements made by Nomura that were later printed by Japanese press. Days after the Orchestra trailer’s premiere, English translations of Famitsu implied that the next trailer will be longer than its predecessors and will have more content and new features that fans will appreciate. These translations also said the game’s “final info” would be revealed at that time.
For a truly starved Kingdom Hearts fan base, those assertions were enough to catapult speculation and hope to their most ravenous levels. In terms of what we should make of those quotes now, we imagine they may be a translation mishap between sources. While far less likely, it’s also possible the trailer has changed since that Famitsu conversation took place. At that time the trailer was still being edited, so maybe Square Enix elected to make some cuts to reveal that “final info” at a later date.
The Kingdom Hearts 3 D23 trailer is just one piece of a larger games-focused presentation called “Level Up.” In addition to Sora and his pals, we also expect to see new content from Disney-franchise titles like Star Wars Battlefront 2 or The Avengers from Crystal Dynamics. The festivities begin July 15 around 4 p.m. EDT. No livestream details have been made known at this time, but press will be on hand to cover the event.
Kingdom Hearts 3 is in development for PS4 and Xbox One.
