Apparently, this one’s been blowing up the festival scene, but The Love Witch is my new obsession and maybe it will be yours too.
Unlike so many homages to cinematic styles past, The Love Witch aesthetic is way more than a gloss. The Love Witch looks like a horror movie with its own vision, told in a perfect embodiment of the British, 60-70s, Hammer/AIP style. Just watching the trailer evokes the sights and sounds of The Masque of the Red Death, Witchfinder General, The Abominable Dr. Phibes, The Plague of the Zombie, The Devil Rides Out, Captain Kronos — Vampire Hunter, Quartermass and the Pit, The Fearless Vampire Killers, Blood on Satan’s Claw, The Wicker Man and The Torture Chamber of Dr. Sadism.
Dear Sweet Satan, I can’t wait to see this!

The Love Witch was directed by Anna Biller (Birth.Movies.Death has an excellent interview with Biller), who also wrote, costumed, edited, scored and set designed. Though her lush costuming and production design achieved much of the aesthetic, The Love Witch gets even closer to period accuracy thanks to cinematographer M. David Mullen, who shot The Love Witch on 35mm, digital be accursed.
The Love Witch will have a limited theatrical run beginning Nov. 11, or can be pre-ordered online (release date undetermined).
