The next game in the Mario Kart series will turn your living space into a race track. Earlier today, Nintendo announced Mario Kart Live: Home Circuit on the 35th anniversary of the first Super Mario Bros. release.
Mario Kart Live: Home Circuit is a mixed reality game that combines the physical go-kart with a virtual track. In Mario Kart Live, players take control of a real-world Mario Kart toy car with an augmented camera built into it. The toy car will be steered using the Nintendo Switch console. The game also features gate markers that allow players to create a virtual track within their living space. Once the track has been built, players can then begin the race through their Nintendo Switch.
Mario Kart Live: Home Circuit is a result of Nintendo and Velan Studios' partnership.
"We invented the initial mixed reality hardware and game prototype to really nail the exhilaration of racing in the real world with the play and feel of a video game," stated Karthik Bala, CEO of Velan Studios. "We showed the experience to Nintendo and were thrilled they saw its potential. That started a wonderful multi-year creative collaboration, which became Mario Kart Live: Home Circuit. We can’t wait to see the creative ways fans play when they race around their own creations as Mario and Luigi.”
Mario Kart Live: Home Circuit is launching on October 16 and players can choose to play the game as Mario or Luigi.
Among the the many announcements Nintendo made earlier today, the company also announced the following:
- A limited-time release of Super Mario 3D All-Stars, which consists of Super Mario 64, Super Mario Sunshine, and Super Mario Galaxy.
- A Super Mario Bros. Game & Watch system.
- A Super Mario battle royale game called Super Mario Bros. 35, in which 35 players play together with one player emerging as the last man standing.
