It's been over eight years since we last saw a Medal of Honor game, with fans wondering whether they'll get another entry in the long-running franchise or not. Thanks to Respawn Entertainment, the VR-exclusive Medal of Honor: Above and Beyond seems to be the first step in reviving the series. Even though fans knew that the game will be launching during the Holiday 2020 window, now Facebook and Oculus have announced December 11 as the official release date for Above and Beyond.
This news comes from Facebook's Connect conference, which also included other announcements like the Oculus Quest 2. Above and Beyond was teased during the summer, and at that time it seemed that the game would be set during WW2. It still feels the same, although there hasn't been any information regarding what the game's plot is going to be like.
What's more interesting about Medal of Honor: Above and Beyond is that it is not just exclusive to Oculus Rift. The game will also be releasing on Steam and Steam users won't need a Facebook account to play the game.
Yesterday, Oculus revealed the Oculus Quest 2, the successor to the previous Quest headset. The brand-new VR headset boasts exciting features like higher resolution screens for each eye, hand tracking, and dedicated thumb rests. However, the most important thing about the Quest 2 is its price tag. The headset will be available starting at $299, which is $100 less than Quest 1's launch price.
Coming back to Above and Beyond, the game is said to feature both a single-player campaign and multiplayer components. Although EA and Respawn have yet to reveal what the campaign and multiplayer entails, Facebook's executive produce Mike Doran said on Reddit that the game will support cross-play between Oculus and SteamVR. He also stated that even though PC players won't need a Facebook account to play the game, the lack of Facebook account will prevent players from sending direct invites to play across platforms. However, both Oculus and SteamVR players can find each other in public matchmaking.
Medal of Honor: Above and Beyond is releasing on December 11 for Oculus Rift and Steam VR.
