The Metal Gear Online beta has come to an end, signaling the official PC launch of Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain’s competitive offering, and the Konami is And Konami is going (a little) out of its way to give MGSV players some incentive to check out Metal Gear Online during launch week.
Just one week after opening Metal Gear Online to the game’s PC community, Konami says the online portion of Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain will lose its beta label. The news is a bit surprising, considering the publisher was forced to take MGO offline less than 24-hours after testing began. It’s even more surprising when you take into account the nature of last week’s outage; downtime which began after players found a way to complete microtransactions without paying for them .
Then again, considering Metal Gear Online has been available on consoles for several months, perhaps we shouldn’t be shocked by the brevity of the MGO beta. Konami’s seemingly hasty exit from the AAA gaming space could have played a role in the decision to launch Metal Gear Online this week.
Surprisingly, Konami says it still plans to release additional new content for Metal Gear Online, despite shuttering the studio that originally handled development of the project. The publisher says players can expect to see Konami “integrating new updates to the game” in the coming months. Sadly, the publisher declined to elaborate, leaving many MGO fans wondering whether they can expect new maps and modes or just new gear to customize their Metal Gear Online avatar. In the interim, Konami says anyone who logs into Metal Gear Online during launch week will receive an extra 3000 Gear Points to buy equipment for their MGO avatar.
