It was previously mentioned that Steve and Alex from Minecraft were set to join Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. However, excited as many are for this new addition, not much was revealed during the original announcement. Now we have additional details, the highlight of which is that the two are officially joining the roster of playable fighters on October 13.
The two are going to be the seventh DLC fighters to join the game and are a part of the second Challenger Pack. In addition to these two new fighters, the pack is also going to introduce a new stage along with seven music tracks from the Minecraft series.
The additional details of the new fighters were revealed by none other than Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Director Masahiro Sakurai in a video that you can watch below:
Just in case you don’t have time to watch the video, we have pulled out some of the highlights. The first is that players can select between a Steve or Alex skin, and each has three color variations. Players can even choose to look like a Zombie or Enderman. Take note that while the characters do look different, they have the same set of moves. These are:
- The Basics
- Similar to Minecraft, all players need to do is hold down the attack button to walk while repeatedly swinging a sword, axe or pickaxe.
- While the attacks have short length, they have a wide range.
- These tools can also be used for abilities new to the franchise which are Mine, Craft and Create Block.

- Mine
- While in battle, Steve and Alex can make use of their tools to dig into the ground or walls of each in order to extract materials.
- The materials found are dependent on the type of surface being dug into.

- Craft
- After mining, players can use the materials collected to craft.
- Since the tools of both Steve and Alex have limited durability, it means that they can break.
- This means that crafting new tools becomes important, especially in getting an advantage on the battlefield.
- By standing in front of a crafting table, which appears on the stage, players can use materials to craft tools.
- Create Block
- Steve and Alex can also use the Create Block move which, obviously, creates a block.
- The blocks can be stacked and placed strategically as defensive maneuvers.
- Blocks use materials, like crafting, so players need to continue to mine in order to ensure there is a supply of material to use.
- Steve and Alex can also use the Create Block move which, obviously, creates a block.
- Final Smash
- Steve and Alex’s explosive Final Smash is called House of Boom.
- After destroying the Smash Ball, players summon a giant piston, which sends opponents flying into the House of Boom.
- From there, the iconic Creepers from Minecraft then set off an explosion and deal massive damage.

The extra content in addition to the fighters include a the new stage which consists of six different areas that are inspired by Minecraft. The destructible areas change randomly during each match. While fighting on this stage, players experience a day and night cycle, with night seeing skeletons and zombies emerge.
Steve and Alex are available with the Fighters Pass Vol. 2, which is priced at $29.99. Players not only get access to these two fighters, but also the previously released Min Min from ARMS along with four more Challenger Packs. Players can also buy these Challenger Pack separately for $5.99. The Fighters Pass Vol. 1 is still available for $24.99 as well, and includes playable fighters Joker, Hero, Banjo & Kazooie, Terry Board, and Byleth.
