A new trailer has been released for The Expanse: A Telltale Series, which gives everyone a look at the gameplay. It’s based on the TV series The Expanse though the game is set before the events of the show. The game is coming in the summer of 2023 on PC and consoles.
The sci-fi show itself is set in the future, where humanity has managed to colonize the solar system. However, there is an ongoing conflict between the people of Earth, Mars, and the Asteroid Belt. When the crew of the Rocinante uncovers an ancient alien technology, it slowly reveals a vast conspiracy that will bring the solar system to the brink of war. The show follows a group of protagonists as they try to uncover and later become involved in a conspiracy.
In the game, players take on the role of Camina Drummer, played by actress Cara Gee. Camina serves as the leader of a scavenging crew on the hunt for a mysterious treasure at the edges of The Belt. Players need to work with a mix of powerful personalities and may need to square off against a bloody mutiny. They also get to explore locations beyond The Belt and make those tough decisions that will decide the fate of The Artemis crew.
The game is being developed by Telltale, which partnered with Deck Nine and Alcon Interactive Group. Players can look forward to new gameplay elements that go beyond what was offered in past Telltale titles. For example, players now have greater authority over action. They also now can communicate with the crew over the radio, and at the discretion of the player, keep the plot and dialogue choices moving forward at the same time with the player’s exploration. All of those character interactions are going to have an impact on the story’s conclusion.
In a statement, Telltale VP of Creative Matt Saia shared that the world of The Expanse is rich with complex characters that grow and change. He also shared that it was an easy choice to make Camina Drummer the main protagonist since not only is she strong and fair, but also has an unexplored background along with a tremendous story arc.
For Stephan Frost, Deck Nine’s game director, part of the space scavenger experience is being able to explore the massive wrecks in the void. He added that gravity plays a big role in immersing players in that environment. Frost went on to say that to make that a reality, they had to make areas larger for players to discover and interact.
Finally, Telltale Vice-President for Narrative Zak Garriss revealed that in the end, the game is a story about leadership. He added that there’s no right or wrong path, and it’s all about the choices and the consequences that follow.
