‘New Mutants’, ‘Gambit’ Movie Release Date Update: Channing Tatum’s ‘Gambit’ Starts Filming Spring 2017

Deadpool 2 and Wolverine 3 may get all the hype, but Simon Kinberg reminded fans at The Saturn Awards not to forget about New Mutants and Channing Tatums’ Gambit . Both films will start production after Wolverine 3 and Deadpool 2 . Unfortunately, Kinberg didn’t specifically comment on the status of the rumored X-Force movie.

“The first thing up, we’re shooting the Wolverine movie right now and we start shooting Deadpool 2 at the beginning of next year, then I sit down and start writing the next one of the mainline X-Men movies real soon,” Kinberg said via YouTube channel That Hashtag Show.

The long-delayed Gambit on the other hand may finally have a release date window. The “heist movie” and a “sexy thriller” could start filming as early as spring 2017. Lea Seydoux was attached to the project as the female lead, Bella Donna, but it’s unclear if she’s still onboard.

“We have a great script on that and hope to shoot that movie at the beginning of spring of next year,” Kinberg continued.

While Kinberg did not confirm the New Mutants roster (read our predictions here), he did say the script is done and he hopes to begin production in the very near future.

"Um, I can't tell you what the roster is, but I can tell you who the director is, which is Josh Boone who directed The Fault In Our Stars , and we have a really good script and I'm hoping to shoot that sometime real soon too.”

When asked about the target audience for New Mutants , Kinberg didn’t specify the young adults like he has in the past. He did say the arc will stay true to the comics, which could be a big hint that we’ll see most of the original New Mutants lineup.

"Um, it's, it's very loyal to the comics, I'll leave it at that, and everybody can decide who it's targeted for. For us, we just go back to the comics and hope we find the audience.”

Josh Boone posted a series of cryptic Instagram posts picturing Wolfsbane, Mirage, Cannonball, Sunspot, Magik, and Warlock in May (Unfortunately Karma was not included). The director did specifically confirm that Professor X will definitely have a role.

While Kindberg didn’t specifically name X-Force as the next “mainline X-Men movie,” Ryan Reynolds recently called the film a “top priority” for the franchise.

X-Men Apocalypse was a mild disappointment, but Hugh Jackman’s highly anticipated final run with the claws (rumored to be titled Weapon X and feature X-23) is set to hit theaters March 3, 2017.
