Nintendo NX rumors have become a weekly occurrence and the latest Nintendo NX update comes out of the Wall Street Journal, which reports that Nintendo will likely launch a new handheld device this year.
An analyst for the U.S. research firm, IHS Inc. told the Wall Street Journal on Thursday they expect shipments of displays sized between 3.1-inches and 5.0-inches wide to increase to 16.5 million units this year, up from 14.1 million units last year.
“We expect a small recovery in shipments of flat-panel displays for game devices because of Nintendo’s new game hardware expected to be released in 2016,” said Hiroshi Hayase, a senior principal analyst at IHS Technology, part of IHS, at the firm’s display forum held in Tokyo.
Hayase declined to comment on the size of the screen sizes NIntendo expects to use in its new device but also told WSJ that he expects the handheld device will be a standalone unit like the 3DS as opposed to being part of a home console like the touchpad controller on the Wii U.
Nintendo, unsurprisingly, declined to comment on the latest reports about its NX console and this possible standalone handheld device but did reiterate that the world will learn more about the Nintendo NX this year.
The latest Nintendo NX and handheld reports seem to corroborate the idea that the NX will be a hybrid console that will act as a traditional “home” console while having a handheld aspect that you can take on-the-go.
Whether this new report regarding a new Nintendo handheld device is accurate, it seems the Nintendo NX will, at the very least, be a home console as Koei Tecmo President and CEO Yoichi Erikawa was confident that would be the case.
With E3 2016 coming in June, the official word about the Nintendo NX, any handheld features and Nintendo’s journey into the smartphone market will be announced around that time.
So what do you think of the possible new Nintendo handheld device? Is it a standalone device or part of a hybrid Nintendo NX console?
