No Man’s Sky has been out for about a week now, and reviews are rolling in. Despite major issues with No Man’s Sky ’s PC launch and controversy over the game’s lack of a multiplayer mode, players are eager to explore the 18 quintillion planets in No Man’s Sky ’s procedurally generated universe , and all the flora and fauna that come with that, like equivalents of birds, whales, bugs and all other kinds of critters.
On certain planets, scanning all planetary fauna will net you major space dolla (that’s “units,” sorry), but that can be easier said than done. If you’re looking for 100% completion on planets, here’s an invaluable tip for scanning all fauna.
Look up.
There will often be birds circling above you, but they may circle or zig-zag in unpredictable ways. Whip out your mining laser or blaster and shoot one of the birds down. Mark where it falls and head over to its corpse.
Turns out, fun tip: you can scan a corpse with your visor no problem. That will put an end to the maddening venture of trying to track a zig-zagging, distant bird with your visor (impossible) and also feel kind of satisfying (screw you, bird! This could have been easier on both of us!).
Another tip while I’m here: Dive into the terrifying sea. Critters lurk there. And you don’t have to shoot those to scan their corpse, unless they’re slippery little zig-zaggers like the birds. Just scan and go - before Emerald Weapon finds you.
