For many people who played The Witcher 3, one of the better highlights was playing the in-game universe’s card game, called Gwent. The popularity reached incredible heights, so much so that developer CD Projekt RED went ahead to make it its own game, called Gwent: The Witcher Card Game.
With a mobile version currently in development and players enjoying it as a standalone Witcher title, Gwent is not going away any time soon. In fact, its longevity just extended, as CD Projekt RED has announced an expansion for the game called Novigrad, which brings the iconic city with beauty at the outset and rot at its core to Gwent.
With this Novigrad expansion comes the newest faction to join the fray of Gwent: the mysterious Syndicate, which is represented in over 90 new cards representing the various sides and faces of Novigrad, the Free City’s underworld. These 90 cards include 15 cross-faction cards, which can be used in the decks of pre-existing factions, for up to three cards each.
The expansion also introduces five new leaders, each with their own unique abilities derived from the stylized Most Wanted of Novigrad. These include Cleaver, the reckless gang leader; the elusive and shadowy King of Beggards; and Hemmelfart, the ruthless hierarch of the city.
Novigrad also brings with it a new meta, the features of which can be viewed below.
- Crowns are introduced as the game’s newest battle resource, which are used to activate the powerful abilities associated with the Fee keyword.
- Profit, a new keyword, will let you gain a number of Crowns. Cards with this ability includes the Grand Inquisitor Helveed and the Pickpocket, both native to the city of Novigrad.
- You can also get profits from Syndicate cards called Crimes, which can in turn trigger additional effects like units bearing Intimidate.
- You can place Bounties, which earns you Crowns for enemies you eliminate, as well as Hoard Crowns, which allows you to save them to make the most out of them.
