Overwatch has received a new patch that changed McCree’s name. It also added some bug fixes including the one related to Junkenstein’s Revenge.
McCree’s Out, Cole Cassidy’s In
For those who do not know, Activision Blizzard was hit with a lawsuit back in July where the Department of Fair Employment and Housing (DFEH) sued the company for cultivating a “frat boy” culture.
While Alex Afrasiabi, the one who was named extensively in the lawsuit for sexual harassment, has his references removed in World of Warcraft, Blizzard didn't stop there as it also changed McCree’s name in Overwatch.
The game’s resident cowboy was named after Jesse McCree, a former Blizzard employee who was also named in the same lawsuit as Afrasiabi. Because of his involvement, the latest patch changed McCree’s name to Cole Cassidy.
On the surface, this can be seen as a step in the right direction by the company, but it seems that the fans are split when it comes to this decision.
User @FirePriest posted on the official forum that this move may confuse old and new players alike. They added that it would be best for Blizzard to just focus on something else instead, such as hosting fundraisers, donating to harassment victims, among others.
On Reddit, @DoctorDeadeye revealed that Blizzard did not stop at the name change as they have also removed most of McCree’s in-game voice lines and interactions.
Another user replied that they hate this move. They said that the cowboy’s original name is a good one and they care less about what happens to the developer (Jesse McCree) in real life.
