The Microsoft Surface Book and Surface Pro 4 aren’t the only new hybrid devices in need of a quick fix. Unlike the Surface line’s battery life issue, Google's Pixel C appears to be having wifi problems.
According to Google forums, some customers who purchased the company's first Android tablet are suffering slow connections. “Sometimes I get half the speed I normally would. Other times it is like 1/8th the speed,” one customer revealed in the product forum. The issue reportedly worsens the farther away the device is from the router. Google has responded to the complaints in the forum, assuring customers the Pixel C team is working on a solution.
“Want to come in here and give you all an update. The team is investigating the issue with poor download speeds on the Pixel C. Thanks for continuing to give us additional information such as router model and WiFI configurations. I’ll keep this thread updated with any info I can get over here,” said Orrin, a Google Employee.
There is speculation that the slow wifi has to do with the keyboard design. Pixel C owner Jason Rossi commented in the forum, “ I think I figured it out. It is the keyboard, in my case at least. Detach the keyboard and download speeds are comparable to my other devices. Attach the keyboard and download is degregated, usually between 20% and 30%.” This would be the worst case scenario. If this proves to be the source of the problem, faster internet speeds wouldn't come by way of a firmware or software update. However, Rossi is staying optimistic. “ It is a Gen1 device. Aside from this issue and multiple f's from time to time, I am really happy over all. They will sort this out I am sure.”
Expert user Nathan K. posted an extensive troubleshooting guide that may help if you are experiencing issues. He also noted people he's talked to using Google's OnHub router have not experienced any issues. It's unclear whether this is coincidence or a result of their hefty purchase.
Any significant updates will be pinned to the top of the Google forum, so keep an eye on this page for the latest news from the Pixel C team.
