There isn’t much room for creativity when creating a new PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds avatar. The current build only features a handful of hair styles, skin tones and clothing options, creating a pool of survivors that all seem to haily from the same handful of families. But PUBG’s executive producer says Bluehole will expand the character creator before PlayerUnknown’s Battleground transitions out of Early Access later this year.
PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds Executive Producer Chang Han Kim confirmed Bluehole’s plans for an expanded character creator during an interview with PVP Live. We’ve known for several months that the game would eventually expand to include tattoos and customizable clothing. The former will rely on preset designs and patterns, which can be placed freely around the body, while the latter will rely on a combination of developer and player-designed logos. But the studio also plans to expand the number of clothing items we’ll be able to customize, as we saw in last week’s work-in-progress gear leak, before PUBG leaves Early Access.
“We plan to give our users much more control over character appearance by implementing Anticto’s Mutable character customization system," Kim told PVP Live. "Soon, you will be able to design your character to a tee.”
It’s not the first time we’ve heard about some of these ideas. The tattoo system, including user placement, was featured in a short Q&A (embedded below) published in November 2016 that introduced the community to Anticto’s Mutable system. We still haven’t seen the game’s clothing customization systems -- which will apparently be detailed enough for players to make small adjustments like tucking and untucking a shirt -- in action yet. But it’s nice to hear Bluehole still plans to rely on the same tech mentioned at the end of last year, if only because it suggests the team has had plenty of time to decide how they’d like to incorporate Mutable into PUBG.
PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds is currently available in Early Access. The game is expected to see a full release later this year and will make the jump to Xbox One in early 2018.
