Niantic, the creators of Pokémon Go , are working on new projects, according to the studio’s CEO, John Hanke. In an interview with Game Informer , Hanke talked about the potential for Augmented Reality in videogames and how other games will start to pop up after the massive success of Pokémon Go.
“I think it’s healthy,” he said. “There is definitely room for multiple successful games in the category. I think it is a really fresh area for game designers, developers, and publishers to explore with new kinds of gameplay. It’s an area where there can still be a ton of innovation.”
Hanke wants players to get moving while playing video games, and Pokémon Go was actually the second real-world Augmented Reality game released by Niantic. Ingress had players stake claims on different locations, gaining points for their team the longer they held it.
“It’s a positive step for everyone to bring games out into the real word and give people the motivation, the excuse, to get out, get some exercise, see new places, and hopefully have good healthy interactions with other human beings,” Hanke said.
The most exciting tidbit of information from the interview had to be Niantic’s plan for future projects. “The Niantic platform is very much a part of our long-term vision and we have some projects that are in the early stages now that will be built on top of it so you can definitely expect to see that from us in the future.”
That means we might see another Augmented Reality-style game from Niantic in the future. They could be working with other intellectual property, or be developing something entirely on their own. Personally, I just want Pokémon Go to work most of the time and for the new tracker to finally be added to the game.
Niantic can create the next big thing in gaming, after they fix their current game.
